Tetsujin 28 Statue

Tetsujin 28 Statue

Completed in 2009, this 18-metre tall statue watching over Kobe depicts Tetsujin 28-gō, the giant, remote-controlled robot from the series of the same name. The story was created in 1956 and written & illustrated by Mitsuteru Yokoyama(A Kobe resident). It tells the tale of Shotaro Kaneda, who inherits Tetsujin after his Father(it’s creator) dies. Shotaro goes on to use the huge robot to fight criminals and other robots.

There have been a number of TV shows and adaptations over the years, the 1963 Tetsujin 28 series was localised for US audiences as Gigantor and a CG-heavy live-action film was released it 2005.

Considering his(literally) huge presence, it’s no surprise Tetsujin is a bit of a celebrity in the area, he features prominently on vending machines nearby, and he even has a street named after him where the streetlamps are modelled after his head! Best of all, unlike the 1/1 Gundam at Odaiba, there are no barriers here so you’re free to walk right up to the big guy!

The Tetsujin 28 statue awaits you in Wakamatsu Park, a short walk from JR Shin-Nagata station!
