Tuesday Time-lapse: Temmangu Shrine

Famous for being the home of Tenjin Matsuri, Osaka’s biggest summer festival, Temmangu Shrine was founded in the 10th century and is devoted to scholar Sugawara no Michizane. This shrine and many others were built to calm Michizane’s angry spirit after he was exiled to Kyushu and died a lonely death. Following his passing, terrible weather lashed Kyoto, leading first to the construction of the similarly named Kitano Tenman-gū in Kyoto city and then many others.

Temmangu is especially nice this time of year when it hosts an annual plum festival!
