Attack on Titan exhibition in Osaka

Attack on Titan(進撃の巨人, Shingeki no Kyojin) is a hugely popular anime at the moment, based on the 2009 Manga of the same name, it debuted on TV here in 2013. It’s set in a world where humans live in walled cities to protect themselves from huge man-eating Titans, it’s a bloody, fairly miserable tale but very entertaining nonetheless.

This exhibition of production materials and 1/1 scale replicas from the show started recently at the ATC in Osaka, I headed down the other day for a look!

I always love seeing the production sketches at this kind of exhibition.

Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear
Arguably the centrepiece is the 1/1 replica of the Three Dimensional Maneuver Gear used by the humans to fly around and battle titans. The detail was ok, a little plain in places – especially the sword hilts, but it was still very cool.

Between this replica and the recent Subaru TV advert featuring live-action titans, I’m slowly building up an idea of what the forthcoming movie could be like. It’s great to see so many practical effects in this ad.

The souvenir shop had plenty of great stuff, cute figures, manga, clothing. Best by far was the baumkuchen(long layer cake) which comes in a box shaped like a plug-in blade!

Attack on Titan exhibition in Osaka - Theme Drinks
Just through the souvenir shop was a small cafe offering special drinks named after three of the main characters, Eren(cranberry) Mikasa(grape) and Levi(melon), ¥500 each. They looked nice, and you got a free original coaster too, but the price was a bit steep for me so I didn’t get one.

Here’s my souvenir! A small &yen:600 charm for your bag or keitai made by the Good Smile Company. There’s no telling which character you’ll get until you tear the box open, there were seven listed possibilities and one mystery character… I was lucky enough to get the mystery guy – Erwin Smith! his face is double sided allowing you to change the expression from calm to crazy 🙂

This exhibition is only in Osaka until February 16th, when I assume it heads on the road. Entry is ¥800 and photos are permitted for the most part, excluding some of the concept art and scripts.

Looks awesome man, I powered my way through the first 14 episodes last weekend when Nathan was up with reflux. (You’ve got to take the good with the bad). Any news on a second season?
