During our recent trip to Okinawa, we took a day trip to Aka Island – one of the Kerama Islands southwest of Naha. It’s a small, quiet place and thanks to the beautiful clear seas, it’s a great place to go snorkeling. While we were buying some drinks in one of the two shops in town, I noticed waterproof disposable cameras for sale and couldn’t resist!
The results aren’t amazing, but considering it was a cheap disposable camera I can’t complain. No need for any instagram-style filters to make these look old school!
The fish weren’t bothered by people at all, and kept swimming right up to me.
Shooting with film for the first time in over a decade was fun, I’m used to blasting off hundreds of shots per day since the advent of digital photography, but going back to a limit of 24 pictures didn’t feel too constraining – it just required a little more patience and consideration. I’d like to try some more underwater photography in the future, but maybe with some kind of digital rig, and a better snorkel.
